The CTC (Community Telemedicine Coordinator) was there waiting for me when I arrived as I had asked. I was relieved that someone was there to pick me up as the airport is about 10 km outside of the community. I soon find out that I didn’t specify that I needed a ride only that she was to meet me there, but being a small community in which everyone knows everyone, we soon got a ride to the nursing station and my hotel. It was later in the day already and the long flight had been the milk run, which means you stop at two communities before landing at the destination.

Most people don’t get enough sleep and that deprives them of much needed energy to last the day. Many are so tired they actually fall asleep at their jobs or don’t have enough energy to workout before work or after work. Of course that’s just another excuse one can make for not working out (see last week’s column on excuses for more on the subject)..

And its allies need a two pronged approach in addition to current policies. First, there must be intensified action against jihadists in Syria, Iraq, Libya, Yemen and elsewhere. They made work pay, as we did under welfare reform. They raised incomes for families with children even if parents were not working, which is not what we do in this country. And they made a bunch of investments in children: universal preschool for 3 and 4 year olds; increased spending on education; doubling the length of paid maternity leave; paid paternity leave.

A: I love traveling and definitely take advantage of all my time off! One of my goals is to visit all 59 National Parks, so I spend a lot of weekends hiking and camping with friends. Last year I also hiked to Machu Picchu with a big group of friends, road tripped through Norway with my college roommate (where we tried to break into a house that turned out not to be our AirBnB), and traveled through Southeast Asia with my family, where we ziplined to the tallest treehouses in the world. Learning about different cultures and experiencing ways of life that are different than mine is really important to me, and I’ve been lucky to have colleagues who are supportive of that.
